Peshawar, October 16, 2026: Following the collapse of a school building in Peshawar, it has emerged that the building had not undergone a technical inspection before the school was registered, despite its reportedly dilapidated condition.
According to official sources, the private school was registered with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Private Schools Regulatory Authority (PSRA) in March 2026.
Registration Despite Poor Building Condition
The school was reportedly registered despite the deteriorating condition of its building. The revelation has raised serious questions about the registration process for private educational institutions and the monitoring of building safety standards.
Regulatory Authority's Position
PSRA Managing Director Javed Iqbal said the authority does not have a dedicated team to conduct technical inspections of school buildings.
He explained that the school had been registered after meeting the required standards for classrooms and other administrative arrangements.
According to Javed Iqbal, the authority has the power to impose fines on schools operating in dilapidated buildings but does not have the authority to shut them down.
Questions Over School Building Safety
The incident has highlighted concerns about the safety of students and teachers, the condition of educational buildings, and the effectiveness of safety checks during the registration process.
Regular technical inspections and a clear division of responsibilities among relevant authorities are essential to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
